Fall is the perfect season to explore Callaway Resort & Gardens' 2,500 acres on two wheels! Enjoy over 13 miles of riding on our paved Discovery Bicycle Trail and check out all the special activities happening all October. 

Extra-fun bicycle activities are planned all month long, including:

  1. Bicycle Scavenger Hunt, Daily; On-your-own Explore the Gardens while looking for clues, approximately 90 minutes
  2. Guided Bicycle Tour of the Gardens, Sundays 2 p.m. (through October), approximately 2 hours
  3. Getting Into Shape – Fitness by Bicycle, Saturdays 10 a.m. 30 minute workshop with Tom Garmon and then bike the Gardens on-your-own
  4. How to Ride a Bicycle 101, 2nd and 3rd Saturdays in October (13 and 20) 2 p.m.
  5. DIY Bicycle Maintenance, 1st and 4th Saturdays in October (6 and 27) 2 p.m., Violet Classroom, Callaway Discovery Center

Basket Weaving: Could Be a Pumpkin

October 13 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

This darling basket is woven outside and then inside an 8” square wooden hoop giving a spherical shape! You choose – natural reed or in burnt orange it could be a pumpkin!  This basket workshop would be appropriate for beginner and intermediate basket weavers. Basketry materials and supplies will be provided. This is a great opportunity to master another basketry technique! All basketry materials, supplies and tools will be provided. Attendees should bring an old bath towel and snacks.

Butterfly Keeper for a Day

Ever wonder what goes on behind the curtain? Well, wonder no more! Come and be a Butterfly Keeper for a day! Learn how to care for butterflies, what they need to be healthy and happy, and help our keepers with the day-to-day operation at the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. You’ll learn how to identify tropical butterflies and help release newly-emerged butterflies into our Conservatory. You’ll get to participate in the unpacking of a new shipment of butterflies and learn all about where they come from.  Participants will also help feed the butterflies by preparing and setting out fruit baskets. And you’ll see what kinds of plants are important for the butterflies and why; and how we maintain a conservatory filled with tropical plants. Participants receive a “Butterfly Keeper for a Day” t-shirt and a certificate of completion. The program includes Gardens admission and a bagged lunch. Participants must be 8 years old or older.

Two-Day Fly Fishing School

Learn the graceful art of fly fishing from our Professional Cast­ing Instructors who teach from years of experience and an infectious passion for their pursuits. Our weekend fly-fishing schools are lim­ited to 10 participants to ensure an effective instructor-student ratio and consists of classroom instruction, casting practice and lake fishing.

Children 12 and older are welcome to enroll in the school (with adult supervision). Boy Scouts of America are invited to enroll and upon completion will fulfill the requirements for the fly fishing badge.

The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens

The first Saturday of every November, magnificent champion thoroughbred horses gather on the Callaway grounds to charge through our stunning woodland setting. Thrilling jumps and deft maneuvers will leave you breathless, while the foxhound parade and Jack Russell Terrier race will put a smile on your face.
