In the 1930s, Cason and Virginia Callaway discovered a place of pristine beauty with exquisite natural springs in west central Georgia. Because of their enchantment with the area, they purchased thousands of acres of depleted cotton fields, including the land that is Callaway Gardens today.

With a mind towards conservation, the Callaways began developing the environment, cultivating the native flora—including the rare prunifolia azalea (aka the plumleaf azalea) that grows wild here—and creating a respite from the world. Their plans were to invite their closest friends to their retreat, but as the Gardens began to take shape, they longed to share it with everyone. Their dreams came true in 1952 when Ida Cason Gardens opened to the public.

An Overview Of What Callaway Gardens Offers:

The Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center
The entrance to Callaway Gardens takes you on a 2.5 mile drive through serene woodland areas and brings you to one of the largest projects in Callaway's history. The Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center dramatically changes the way guests experience Callaway Gardens. A film, The Story of Callaway Gardens runs continually. Eager staff, as well as informative displays and brochures, provide guests with information about all there is to see and do throughout Callaway Gardens. The Discovery Center also features an education wing, the art of nature artist Athos Menaboni, a gift shop and the Discovery Cafe. The Center allows guests to park their cars and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paths to nearby attractions. Transportation opportunities include walking or biking.

Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center
A glass enclosed tropical butterfly conservatory is home to more than 1,000 tropical butterflies representing more than 50 species. Visitors walk within the tropical environment as butterflies flutter about freely.

John A. Sibley Horticultural Center, Callaway Gardens John A. Sibley
Horticultural Center

This garden/greenhouse complex spreads over five acres and has more than 20,000 square feet of indoor floral display area. In addition to breathtaking displays that fill the Sibley Center all year, there is also a 22-foot waterfall.

Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden
This is a 7.5 acre home demonstration garden that produces more than 400 varieties of crops. The southern segment of Public Broadcasting System's [PBS] series, "The Victory Garden," is filmed here.

Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel
Named in honor of Cason Callaway's mother, the chapel is a place of inspiration and beauty set in the heart of Callaway Gardens. Its design is English Gothic, patterned after the rural chapels of the 16th and 17th centuries.
